What to Expect

Following a tooth scaling and root planing treatment, it is actually quite uncommon to experience any swelling or stiffness. However, if you do, we recommend placing a warm compress or heating pad on the affected area. This can reduce any swelling you are experiencing along with stiffness and discomfort. Discomfort can be common around the treatment area for a few days following your treatment along with sensitivity. We recommend taking aspirin and gently caring for your smile. Fluoride toothpaste may also help reduce any sensitivity you are experiencing. If you continue to experience any swelling or stiffness following your treatment, let Pacific Heights Dental Studio know. Additional treatment may be required.

Things to Avoid

When it comes to scaling and root planing, it is important to be as gentle as possible with your gums and the affected area. For at least 24 hours following your treatment, we recommend avoiding any tobacco or alcohol use. When eating, try to eat light foods and use only the side which was not treated.

Things You Should Do

You should be immediately brushing and flossing your smile following your treatment, it may be a bit uncomfortable but just be as gentle as possible. We also recommend rinsing with warm salt water 6-8 times a day for a few days.
