Have you recently had a tooth extraction in San Francisco or are planning on having one? Wondering what exactly you can expect or should be doing following your tooth extraction? At Pacific Heights Dental Studio, we are dedicated to educating each of our patients that visit our practice. We believe that patient education is an essential part of providing the best dental care possible to our community. When it comes to tooth extractions, recovery is usually quite easy. However, there are some things you should avoid and certainly some things you should be doing to speed up your recovery and avoid any complications. If you have any questions, concerns or comments following your tooth extraction, please contact Pacific Heights Dental Studio, we would be happy to answer any of your questions and even schedule you for an appointment if need be.

What to Expect

Following a tooth extraction, swelling, discomfort, and bleeding are all common. There is an open wound in your mouth, and you should make sure to be gentle and take proper care of the area. Take any medication prescribed by your dentist and be sure to replace the gauze if bleeding still persists at bedtime. If bleeding continues after the first day, please let your dentist know.

Things to Avoid

When it comes to a tooth extraction, there are some things you should be avoiding for the first day or so. Excessive exercise, cigarette smoking, alcohol and even using straws can actually increase swelling, bleeding, and discomfort. Touching the area with your finger can also increase your risk of an infection.

Things You Should Do

If you are experiencing discomfort or pain due to your extraction, we recommend using a cold pack or rinsing with warm salt water. A light diet is also recommended, avoiding any foods that could potentially get stuck in the wound.

If you experience any problems following your San Francisco tooth extraction, call your dentist right away. You may need additional care.
